hi everybody!
it has been a long time since I’ve written my last post…Sooo, while Claire is speaking about Indonesia, I’m gonna speak about an amazing country, India…I’m back to introduce you to the Indian world!! Actually I’m totally fond of this land whose geography, culture, society I know thanks to fascinating lessons during a whole year in my Preparatory class.
I know two of you (or maybe more?) are going to practice FLE in this gigantic country. So for you who will live overthere (and for the others of course!!), I’m going to speak at first about typical food. That is to say about Thali…(same name as one of us I think!). It’s a meal the Indians always eat, and which is cheap and very nourishing. You all know that India is a country that is very favorable to rice growing, because of monsoon. We’ll speak later about it. By the way, thalies are very different according to the place you live, but they are almost always made of rice and bread. The Indian serve a lot of things with them, like sauces, vegetables, dal (Indian name for lentils), meat, fish, salad such as diced cucumber, red onions dressed in lime juice and toasted cumin powder, pickles (much sharper in flavour than European equivalents!) and relishes. Or also several different breads called naans, chapatis, parathas, puris…sound very nice! All is served in little bowls, nicelly places in a tray, or on banana tree leaves in the South of India. You may think “it’s very exotic”, moreover you can eat it with your right hand. Indeed, the Indian regard their left hand as impur. But when you eat a thali, let me say it’s just a great moment of conviviality. Besides this point, the Indians are said to be very hospitable, and are keen on sharing their food, their thalies.
If you want to try it, it’s not worth flying to India, some of great restaurants in Paris cook them delicious. Of course,, they don’t really taste like true thalies, maybe because you are not in the right place to enjoy this meal’s conviviality and meaning. Has somebody already tried one of those restaurants? Where?
I guess you are all drooling at the sight of the photos…and you are totally right!
yummy! yummy! look delicious.
May I say that I have never eaten indian food.
I know I only try thai food.
You’ve never eaten Indian food Deb? Well you’ll have opportunities aplenty in Manchester!
I adore Indian food, though it took me a little while to really enjoy it. I ate it from time to time even when I was very little, in Hong Kong, but at first just found it so spicy and rich.
It’s true it’s rich and full of flavours. It’s very easy to have eyes bigger than your stomach when you choose your dishes, and then you have far too much!
A year or two ago I started to hear about the Southern Indian cuisine, and how it’s probably the most different from food found in the rest of the country. Since then, I’ve been to Southern Indian restaurants a few times and always loved it! In particular something called Dosa with coconut chutney! *drools*
Nice post Agathe. So have you ever actually visited India?
A few corrections:
this land (“country” is possibly a better word, but land works) whose geography, culture *and* society..
So for *those of you* who will liver over there…
take another look at “all served in little bowls; nicelly places *on* a tray” (check if you have simply mistyped a couple of words, or if they’re actually mistakes)
“impur”
“great moment of conviviality” –> “great social occasion”
“restaurants in Paris who cook them delicious” –> “who cook delicious examples”
I will try it, david, definitely!!!
actually, two years ago my class had planed a travel in the South of India, from Bangalore to Madras, but a few months before the travel I have had health problems, so I could not take the plane anymore… and had to cancel the travel… 😥 but my “classmates” brought photos back and told me everything about the travel…sniff… it will remain such a frustration!!I wish I had other oportunities to go over there
😦 yeah definitely, you must. I wanna go too! I think my girlfriend and I will go at some point in the future. And I want to see how Indian food in the UK compares with India!
You will have a good opportunity when Manon will work in India 😉
mhhhhh…I think I’m gonna eat just rice during 3 months…
I’ll tell you what I think about indian dishes in a few months…!
I have never tried too but it seems to be really good !
Maybe someone knows if there is a good indian restaurant in Lille ?
Deb don’t worry you are not alone ! I never tried it too ! ^_^
But i wanna try. Do you know a good Indian restaurant in Lille maybe ?
Yes, I would like to know if there is an indian restaurant in Lille. We should try one.
